Navigator Reporting In

Posted on Mon Aug 14th, 2017 @ 5:22am by Fleet Admiral Donatella Figueroa & Lieutenant Junior Grade Shras th'Zarath

Mission: S01E01 - At the Brink of Night
Location: Engineering

Shras entered engineering and saw the normal routine of ship life. He took in the sight for a minute, almost in a daydream. He was snapped out of it however when an engineer spoke. He shook his head and looked around in sn abrupt manner. "Oh, I'm sorry." he said.

"No problem, Can I help you, sir?" he asked. " Must be new."

" Yes actually. I'm looking for the First Officer's office." Shras replied. The engineer nodded. " Yes sir, it's right over there." he replied, pointing in the general direction. Shras thanked him and made his way over there. He rang the chime.

Captain Figueroa was making her rounds aboard the starship, all ten decks of the Musashi when she had received word that yet another transfer had come aboard. This time from the USS Constitution, but indirectly from another starship it had rendezvoused with earlier.

She was directed to Engineering by the transporter operator who beamed the man aboard. Fig wanted to meet him personally as he was going to be part of her Bridge crew and senior staff. Finally a Chief Navigator she thought to herself as she entered main Engineering and greeted with salutes from young engineers and technicians. She gave a nod to each of them as she found her way towards Vic's office. She knew that her Chief Engineer was not there at the moment, but figured it was the right place to find the newest arrival.

Indeed, the Captain's intuition was correct. "You must be the new Nav" she said as she saw the Andorian and looked at him in awe. They had such stunning blue skin contrasted with snowy white hair, and those antennae that wiggled and twitched caused her to deeply suppress a bit of child-like glee. "My First Officer is not in his office right now, but whatever you need my XO for, I'll personally take care of it" she said with a polite nod.

Shras nodded back. He assumed that he just met the CO. He saluted. "Lieutenant jg Shras th'Zarath reporting, Captain" he said.

I love it when they salute me she thought to herself. It caused a smile to tug at the corners of her mouth, but there were three unspoken rules to being a starship Captain. 1. Never let the crew see your sweat from fear. 2. Under no circumstance let the crew see you cry, and of course 3. Captains rarely smile and these unspoken rules had guided Fig into a command of her own. She lived by them. "I've never served with an Andorian before, Lieutenant. I know of your people of course...a founding member of the Federation and strong willed in battle" she said with a curt nod.

Captain Figueroa looked at the young man and looked at his antennae then back at him eye level. "I look forward to having a fine Chief Navigator on the Bridge again. My last Nav was an excellent young man, but he gave his life in the line of duty. You have big shoes to fill, Lieutenant th'Zarath" said the Captain, humanly butchering the Andorians name with a inaccurate pronunciation. I need to brush up on my Andorian she thought trying not to look too awkward.

Shras nodded back, ignoring the Captains mispronunciation of his name. "I'm honored, Captain." he replied, he handed over the PaDD that he was carrying. " I look forward to serving under such a fine Captain." he added, returning the compliment.

"Fine" she said repeating his word choice and smiled ever so slightly. "I do not usually get called a 'fine Captain' very often if eve, Lieutenant. I have a good service record, but a terrible record with keeping this starship in tact. The Klingons have seemingly placed a target on my back during the Four Years War" she explained. "Your navigation expertise and prowess may be heavily relied upon to keep us away from Klingon lickings" she further added.

"I'll try my best." Shras replied. He winced at the word Klingon. He shuddered at the mention of them. "They'll have to work to find us. I learned a trick or two from my CO in that regard."

Fig took a deep breath and looked at the man. Try she had the word rolling around in her head. "Let's leave the try for when we are not facing Klingons or in crunch time, Lieutenant. Unfortunately, we do not have the luxury to try our best when it comes to the Klingons. We either do or do not, and even when some of us do our best, it is not good enough. Those Klingons are savage and relentless."

"Yes, Captain." he said. "I understand completely." he added, partially embarrassed.

You cannot afford to lost this crew, Donatella. Remember your training. Remember your weaknesses she thought to herself, knowing that her weaknesses were her disconnection to the crew and her consistently applying too much pressure on them. She placed a hand on the Lieutenant's shoulder "Lieutenant, your service record speaks for itself. You would not be here if I did not have complete faith in your abilities. I know you will not let this starship and your shipmates down" she said reassuringly.

Shras nodded. His embarrassment lifted as he heard the bolstering words from his CO. There was no way he would fail now. He nodded in agreement. "Thank you, Captain." he said. He stopped himself from saying "try" again. The thought of failure was present but in the back of his mind. "I won't let anyone down if its in my power."

"That sounds like a plan to me, Lieutenant, and a plan to stick by" said the Captain with a nod. "Please feel free to explore the ship...all ten decks of her and get to know the starship well. If you need anything you can go to Commander Samuels, my Second Officer. Commander Miller will be busy for a while" she said, opting not to explain that presently her First Officer was confined to quarters.

"I'll do that. Thank you." Shras replied.

Fig gave a simple nod at the man's direction. "Dismissed" she said smoothly and parted ways with the man. She continued on to walk around Engineering and having a check on how things were running without Vic. For now things were okay, but she would need to figure something out soon. Going into the a potential battle with Klingons and not having a Chief Engineer was dangerous.
