Mission:
S01E04 The Outpost Has Eyes
Location: Sickbay, Deck Five, USS Musashi
Timeline: Early morning 0400 hours
ON:
After her meeting with the captain and the briefing update she took some time and read all her notes and the memo briefing tape. She was as ready as she could be. She'd worked through the night to move things around and to update medications and to alphabetize everything. She'd worked straight through without sleeping. In fact she hadn't slept for two days. She was exhausted but there was much to do.
She fought a smile when she saw Elijah sleeping on the little shelf by the bio bed. The squirrel kept her grounded, she had to admit to that. She was so wrapped up in her changes that she didn't hear the door hiss open.
Aeryn took in the haggard appearance of the new chief and swore inwardly. This woman was supposed to be good, but it seemed that was not the case as she couldnt be trusted to take care of herself. "Do not tell me you've been here since yesterday."
She turned to the woman who'd entered. "Ah you must be Nurse Vinia. "I am Lieutenant Commander Seleya the new CMO indeed and I have been here since shortly after boarding." The sickbay was much changed things moved around but they all seemed to have an order and everything was labeled and alphabetized.
Utterly exasperated she rubbed her hand over her face in a gesture of pure irritation "Aeryn, I would say it was nice to meet you, but since you're working yourself to exhaustion I cannot honestly do so. Faith in Eden, what happens if you collapse?"
"I do not collapse. The Vulcan system is a bit more...stable then the humanoid. There have been I have been awake for a week. The key is meditation." She motioned to the newly enclosed office. "I have been waiting to speak with you. I wished to speak with you separately from the rest of the staff." She motioned for the woman to sit when they reached the office. "May I pour you some coffee or tea?" She had both in thermos like canisters.
"You are not infallible, but suit yourself..." Aeryn answered as she settled herself into a chair and heaved a small sigh "what kind of tea?"
"I have peppermint as well as Vulcan spice...not the replicated kind, I assure you." She said standing at the tea station she'd set up to the side.
"Vulcan spice. Ive not had that before and I like new things" the nurse chose after a moment of deliberation.
Seleya filled two cups of tea and set one before the nurse and one before her. She sat down. "I have asked to see you separately because there are a few items that I wish to discuss with you and I wanted to make a change in your position here in Sickbay." She took a sip of tea. "I also wish to debrief about what has been going on since the last CMO was here."
"Oh?" There were many layers of meaning in her tone and Aeryn chewed on the inside of her lip to keep her hurt feelings in. "I had thought my daily reports would be adequate..."
She gave a nod, "They were very well written but there is sometimes more to be understood from conversation. Now I understand that you functioned as a counselor of sorts to crew members." She looked at the woman. "Is that correct?"
"Of sorts, but that is by no means my primary function. That does occasionally fall into the scope of a Nurse Practitioner, especially when one is familliar with the ins and outs of mental health. I would not call myself a counselor." Briefly she hoped that made sense to the other woman.
"Did you enjoy the counseling aspect of the duties you preformed?" She had that one final question before discussing how the Nurse's role would change.
"Sometimes, as with all things that I do it was necissary at the time and that is in and of itself rewarding." Her bright blue hair shivered as she leaned back a little in the chair so she might sip her tea.
She stayed silent for a moment. "Very well. Now I would like to discuss with you how I would like to change your job duties. You will, of course, be free to say yes or no but I would be remiss if I did not ask." He looked at the woman in front of her. "Ready?"
"As I am going to be." Aeryn muttered before leaning forward slightly to indicate her interest in the topic.
"I think that you have done a commendable job here. With the way the department was and the lack of a CMO you performed under difficult circumstances. I will be submitting a high commendation request for you and for what you have done. I would like to offer you a chance to grow. Would you consider adding counseling to your duties? If you are happy with it we can revisit and we can have you get certified to do both nursing and counseling." She sat back waiting for the woman's answer.
"In addition to my duties here?" Aeryn asked to clarify just what she wanted "I wouldnt be passed over for shifts in sickbay to counsel people?"
"Of course not. Primarily you would be a Nurse but if counseling is needed then you would assist with that. This is by no means an order." She wanted to put the woman at ease. "It is an acknowledgement of your skills and abilities."
"I must admit I am intregued by the possibilities. I am willing to give it a try and see if it suits me." Aeryns voice was thoughtful and she was slightly more at ease.
"Excellent. Tell me a little about yourself. As CMO my job is to assist those who work under me to attain their goals. What are you goals what do you hope to achieve while here on the Musashi?" She was genuinely curious. This woman done so much and deserved a commendation for all she had done.
"Initially, I came aboard because we didnt have a CMO....and anything was preferable to being stuck in an inpatient psychiatric facility." Aeryn laughed softly "I am Catullan as you can tell." She gestured to her ears hair and raspberry all in one gesture. "And I hadnt really focused on any goals yet. I was much too focused on other things like keeping everyone alive and healthy."
She gave a nod. "Well now you can focus on your goals. If I can help in any way. Please let me know."
Aeryn made a noncommittal agreeable noise as she sipped at her tea. The unique blend of spices tickled her nose and had her smiling into the teacup. This promises to be interesting.
