When the Heart Bleeds

Mission:
S01E04 The Outpost Has Eyes
Location: Various
ON:
Seleya stood at the entrance of the shuttle. She took a look back at the city and shook her head. Everything was a blur to her, the packing, the trip back to the Apollo, all of it. The only certainty was the words that Essex had uttered. They played like an unending loop in her mind.
”Seleya go to your new ship. You are no longer wanted on mine.”
It was like a punch to the gut. The pain of the words threatened to stop her from breathing. She tried to shake off the pain. With one final look she entered the shuttle and closed the door. Soon she would need to be at her new post and she would focus on that.
The hum of the shuttle engines had a soothing effect on her as she settled in her chair. As the shuttle ascended she pulled out her personnel files and began to review the information. Perhaps learning about her new ship and crewmates would allow her respite from the pain she felt.
Essex had been walking around like the living dead since his conversation with Seleya. He’d been angry with himself. His mind kept going over things. The feel of her hand on his chest, her lips only a breath away and then the shattering pain in her eyes at his words. He wanted to kick his own ass. He had to get her away for her own safety but he would never forgive himself for the pain he’d caused her.
He’d wandered the ship for a few hours and then found himself in sickbay. The space felt empty just like his heart. He walked over to the office that had once been Seleya’s and there, across the chair, was a brown and pink shawl. He recognized it right away. Gently as if it was made of fine porcelain he lifted it. His eyes misted over as her sent, now forever lost to him, floated to his nose.
“Admiral?”
He turnd angry eyes towards the unwanted visitor. “What?!”
“I’m Henry Adams, your new CMO,” the man hesitated.
Essex turned tightening his hold on the shawl.
“Fine. I have one rule. You do NOT change one inch of this sickbay. It stays as is. I want the same layout, the same organization structure, get to know it because if one thing is changed I will boot you out of the airlock.”
He stormed past the new CMO shawl in hand.
Once back in the safety of his own quarters he collapsed to his knees burying his face into the shawl letting his tears soak into the soft well-worn shawl.
Could he live without her?
Could he go on?
Only time would tell…
The trip, although not too long, seemed to drag on. She had discouraged the pilot form his idle chit chat several times in the last while. When finally the ship was in sight she could barely hold back her need to get to work.
Another fresh start, another new beginning.
Could she do it?
She didn’t know if she had one more new beginning in her. The other question was could she continue to function without Essex near? The one man that had haunted her dreams now haunted her waking hours with his rejection.
The words that had so callously flown out of his mouth had shattered her and it took all of her Vulcan training to keep her functioning.
