Mission: S01E02 D-8 With the Devil
Location: Deep Space Station K-7

Lieutenant JG Kylian Linwood adjusted his position at the tiny desk for the the millionth time that evening. Not that he didn't enjoy the fact that he was literally waiting for his first Starship assignment, but he had to admit that Deep Space Station K-7 was not much for accommodations. What served as his quarters was about the size of a closet. Granted it would be a large, walk-in closet, but a closet nonetheless. It was almost impossible to dress in the room without hitting his head on something and his bed was a hammock that he strung catercorner across the room at night. Fortunately, he mostly just needed the room to sleep and store what few belongings he'd brought with him.

Otherwise, the station was great. It was almost brand new and run by civilians, which was interesting. It did give Kylian something to do on a regular basis. The station did not currently have a doctor. One was on their way, but in the meantime Kylian was standing in. There were often a variety of injuries not only from the civilian staff, but also on incoming and outgoing ships. Most of those ships were traders, workers and Starfleet personnel. Most injuries were minor, but lately it seemed that he had heard more and more stories of ships being attacked by Klingon raiders. It seemed that the situation was heating up between the Federation and the Klingons. Being this close to the border was bound to be a little dangerous.

The Klingons had been occupying his mind as of late. He was trying to learn the language. Kylian was good at learning languages. He was already fluent in most Earth languages and Vulcan. He was also, almost completely fluent in Andorian, a language that was reportedly difficult for humans to learn. The biggest problem with Klingon is that there were very few that taught it. He was in constant contact with a Denobulian professor at Starfleet Academy to learn what he had. Tonight was no different. He sat at the tiny desk with his PaDD on one propped up knee studying Klingon. Or at least trying to.

"Lieutenant Linwood to the medical ring. Lieutenant Linwood to the medical ring," came over the loudspeaker.

Kylian sighed and rose, putting his PaDD aside and heading for the medical ring. It wasn't really a ring. It was just a big round room. Fortunately, it was well stocked, waiting for a new medical staff. Unfortunately, Kylian was the medical staff, currently. When he got to the medical ring there were quite a few Starfleet uniforms standing around and several people on the biobeds. Kylian shook off his daze and rushed into action. A plasma leak in the engine room had caused some serious burns on several crew members. They had a doctor, but that was all they had after a run in with some pirates.

The ship was the U.S.S. Gibraltar and its Captain was one Dayton Taylor. He had a Vulcan first officer they called Skit. When Kylian had arrived the First Officer had herded everyone but the Captain from the room and their ship's doctor. Kylian found, after almost an hour, that his name was Mack Cohen. The worst burns were on two of the six people hurt. One was the Chief Engineer, Trevor Mccray, from the Gibraltar and the other was an Ensign named Sam. Both Doctors worked late into the night to keep the two alive and the Captain never left the medical ring the entire time. He also did not make a pest of himself and was quick with an extra hand, refusing to leave, even when told to go several times by both Kylian and Doctor Cohen.

When most of the immediate danger for the two patients left had eased, Kylian sat down in a chair next to Captain Taylor and wiped his face. He took a deep breath and smiled at Taylor. "Everything's going to be okay. We're mostly out of the woods. I'm afraid that Lieutenant Mccray might have some scars, but the Ensign should make a full recovery."

Taylor nodded. "Good. I went through the Academy with Mccray. When I got this assignment I asked for him. It's my fault he's here."

"You can't blame yourself, Captain. These things happen. It's space. He went through the Academy just like you and I did. He knew the risk when he accepted the assignment. Besides, he's going to make a recovery." Kylian smiled again. "You should get some sleep. I should get some sleep. We should all get some sleep. The injured guy has the right idea." He gestured to the man on the nearest biobed, sleeping peacefully.

The Captain chuckled, which was Kylian's goal. He patted the man on the shoulder and stood.

An hour later he was climbing into his bunk finally, not even really sure what time it was or how long he had been in the medical ring. He was exhausted beyond reason and had almost fallen asleep when his comm system beeped. "Incoming message for Lieutenant Linwood. Incoming message for Lieutenant Linwood."

Kylian groaned and pulled himself up out of his bunk. "Patch it through please..." he responded, groggily.

His personal console flickered into life and a face appeared on the screen. "Lieutenant Linwood?"

When he recognized his grandmother, he sat up quickly. "Sorry Admiral. I was asleep. It's been a long... whatever it was. What can I do for you, ma'am."

"Kylian, get up. I finally have an assignment for you. The U.S.S. Musashi will be coming for you when they are done with their current assignment," she said in a serious tone.

Kylian felt relief wash over him. Finally, a real assignment. "Thank you, Ma'am," he grinned and slipped down out of the hammock to sit at his desk. "What kind of ship is she?"

"Ares class. You'll be in residency with their medical doctor, Doctor Hill." She put her hands up as if in supplication. "I didn't pull any strings to get you the position either."

Kylian chuckled. "It's alright, grandmother, but thank you for letting me know. It's good to hear from you."

"Keep it formal, Kylian."

"Yes, Admiral." He continued to smile. "Thank you. Is there anything else?"

"No, they should be there within the week," she replied, her face serious. "I know you will do your best. Admiral Linwood out."
