Mission: S01E02 D-8 With the Devil
Location: USS Musashi

Cornet Jakku was young in several ways. He was young in ways that most of the crew would never understand unless the Trill became members of the Federation and started to share with these outsiders, the intimate details of their world, their culture, and their species. Cornet or as the Captain called him, 'Mister Jakku' out of respect for his non existent rank and non existent rating for a position he took over at the pleasure of the Captain's permission. He had knowledge of starships albeit not those of Federation design, but after a few weeks of training on the communications controls, he was able to perform the duties as simply as a crewmen could. K'Niras was also a very patient and thorough tutor, and Cornet knew that he was learning from someone who knew what they were doing.

Slowly but steadily, he worked his way over to learning other basic ship functions such as launching probes, taking certain types of scans with both the short range and long ranger sensors. He was learning the basics at the science station, and socializing with Arturo while the ensign worked in stellar cartography plotting courses and updating star charts had been beneficial to Cornet Jakku learning about the strong correlation and practically symbiotic relationship between stellar sciences, physics, and astro-navigation. Cornet had only been a part of this crew for a few months time in Earth measurements that is. There was so much more to learn. He was not the only Trill aboard a Federation starship or station as a participant in one of these programs. There were even a small handful of Trill who had enlisted in Starfleet or went through Starfleet Academy, but these cases were rare.

Time was running out for Cornet though. His time aboard the USS Musashi was going to be up sooner than he wanted to think about. The program moderators were already lining up his next placement which likely going to be on a Federation starship with a more Vulcan crew or on a Tellarite vessel. He was thinking about dropping out of the program, not because he was not enjoying the ability to be a participant, but rather because he did not want to leave the Musashi. He did not want to leave Captain Figueroa, Commander Samuels, Ensign Marquez, and the others he was working alongside day in and day out. The Captain had jokingly said once that if he ever wanted, he could simply join her crew. She would make sure that the Trill did not bother him about it and that Starfleet and the Federation wouldn't move him. He thought she was just joking, but he could not help but wonder if there perhaps was some truth to her words.

Enlisting in Starfleet would mean leaving the starship and going through basic training. Cornet doubted that Fig had the means to snatch the young Trill out from the pool of fresh enlistments after basic training and lasso him back aboard the Musashi. However, he was putting some serious thought into exploring his options. He knew that the personnel officer aboard the Musashi could potentially help him with his inquiries, but the personnel officer was intended to help Starfleet personnel which he for all sense and purposes was not. The Chief of the Boat was aboard to help the enlisted servicemen and servicewomen aboard. Again, not Jakku. This ultimately lead him to the conclusion that he would need to seek out his help from higher up, but he did not wish to disturb the Captain. She had enough on her plate and was pregnant. K'Niras and Commander Samuel as the ship's Second Officer and Executive Officer respectively seemed like the obvious choices. Perhaps they would be able to help him?
