| General Overview | Michael is very much a closed book... generally. When he does share something personal, you better believe that he has an angle. He can be viewed is cold and unfeeling and somewhat of a grouch but he is nothing of the sort. He is deeply sensitive and, if anything, cares too much. He is strong and emotionally steady. He knows what he wants and his deep thundering voice tells others that he means business. He has a wicked sense of humour that he only shares with those he is comfortable with. | Personal History | {The Early Years} Michael Gregori Essex was born one stormy August day on Earth's lunar colony to a Starfleet Security Officer and his wife, a doctor. He was the third child, the third son of a couple whose marriage was on the rocks. He was unexpected and unwanted and growing up his parents never let him forget that fact always treating his brothers better and with more care. Essex was left to fend for himself. Bullied as a child for his small size and thin frame he vowed to be taller and stronger. He excelled in school but was a quiet and studious child who kept to himself. His favourite pastime was looking up at the stars and dreaming of sailing the starry seas. He knew early on that science was his thing and he was always drawn to Stellar Cartography and Archaeology/Anthropology. When his sister came along it was clear that his parents' marriage was close to non existent. They stayed together for show but his father had a series of mistresses strewn throughout the galaxy an his mother had turned into a bitter and angry woman. Essex and his baby sister were on the outs and he pretty much took to raising not only himself but her too. He was more father to her then their father. In the mean time the rift between his brothers and him was growing. Michael had a good heart and never begrudged his brothers the lavish attention their parents paid them. He taught his sister, who had as good a soul and heart as he did, that it was what it was an he tried to make a life for both of them. Through high school Michael hit his stride. He shot up in height and developed muscle during his stint on the wrestling team. His love of science never faded and soon he was lead in the science club and captain of the debate team. His grades were perfect and he was in the top 3% of his class. At 18, it was clear that nothing he nor his sister did would please their parents. He left home at 18 and took his sister with him raising her as if she was his own daughter. He stayed in the academy for 6 years (4 general & 2 MA years) giving himself time to get educated and giving his sister time to grow up and enter the academy herself. {The Officer Years} As an officer Michael was always the first one on duty and the last one to leave. He picked up any shift he could and was keen to learn from those around him no matter what department. He was known as the go to guy if you needed help. From moving crates with the crewmen, to helping take a spare security shift when someone was down with the flu. His COs and XOs respected him but hey found that he was a little on the stubborn side had a way of finding loopholes in the rules to suit his ideas. Great assets for command but not so much to be commanded. As he progressed through the ranks he began to see what he liked and what he didn't. He pulled into himself mimicking his COs an learning a quiet leadership style from them. His work was impeccable and he rose through the ranks quickly. Eventually his talent for diplomacy and his way of getting things done caught the attention of the right people and he was on the fast track to command. His moral code was impeccable but he knew how to bend when needed. He respected but aloof yet when the chips were down the crew knew they could count on him for anything. While serving on the USS Sentinel he was awarded a special commendation for saving the life of his CO from a Romulan attack and several awards and commendations for his quick thinking and scientific prowess. When he was given his own command he handpicked his crew and reorganized how things were done. He lead the ship into many a skirmish with the Klingons earning him several Purple Hearts. {The Day the Earth Stood Still} Shortly after his promotion to Captain a new medical officer transferred to his ship. Essex was hypnotized by not only her beauty but her gentle soul. She was strong yet he couldn't help but be drawn to her vulnerability. He had an instant attraction to her mind, body, and soul and he calls it the day the Earth and the Stars stood still. In her he found everything he'd always wanted in a woman. The issue was that he was her commanding officer and he would not cross that line no matter how much he wanted to. He tried to guide her as much as he could and he saw pretty quick that the crew was not happy with her Vulcan heritage. He also noticed special abilities in her that were more then Vulcan. Worried that Starfleet would send her to a lab to be studied he tried to hide her abilities as best as he could and even made himself a stern authority figure to the crew so that their taunts and ill treatment of her would be known to be against the rules. Pretty quick the crew learned to appreciate her abilities but they also dared not say anything against her for she was clearly the Captain's favourite. Commander Rich Rogers, Michael's best friend, was the only one who knew the depths of Michael's feelings for Seleya and what lengths he'd gone to protect her. {All for Love} When Seleya was transferred to the Musashi, a transfer he initiated himself to protect her, he decided that life without her was dull and painful. Essex used several favours he was owed by a few high up Admirals and got his XO, Rich Rogers, promoted to Captain and given command of the Apollo. Essex decided to take a step back and playing on the fact that the Musashi was understaffed and that some of the admirals hemmed and hawed about the current CO he got himself assigned as an advisor and helper in the Science department. He knew that that captain Figueroa would resent him being there but he was determined to be near Seleya. He swore he'd help her find out about her past and he needed to protect her rest of the world be damned. He also knew he could keep the other Admirals off Figueroa's back... he only hoped the good captain wouldn't toss him out the first airlock she could get him to. |
