Personal History Charles Irving Bartowski was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to Douglas and Sylvia Bartowski in 2235. As a child, Chuck lived under the yoke of his parent's ignorance and their admiration of his older brother Jack, who seemed to outshine Charles at every opportunity, leaving him to live in the shadow throughout most of his childhood and teenage years. Throughout high school, he was an above-average student with a healthy dose of extracurricular activities, although he never showed much leadership ability. A few months before his high school graduation in 2251, Chuck elected to apply to Starfleet Academy and complete his entrance examinations in order to follow his brother, who had left home to operate a freighter. In May, Chuck received a crushing blow when he was notified that he had not granted admission but was permitted to serve as an alternate. Seemingly condemned to a life of working on his parent's farm, he became dejected and withdrawn. For the next two months, Chuck toiled in the fields, hating every moment of it. Suddenly, in August of that year, Chuck received a visit from a Starfleet Academy admissions officer that Chuck had been accepted as an alternate applicant but with a caveat- there were no slots available for the Helm, Navigation, or Tactical programs, which were Chuck's first choices but he would be authorized to attend under the Engineering program. Faced with a choice of either remaining in Alabama and working for his parents and attending the Academy, he chose the latter. Arriving at the Academy in early August, newly minted Cadet Fourth Class Bartowski experienced an intense culture shock due to the change of scenery and the newfound structure. However, by the end of the year, he had finally begun to adjust to life in the Cadet Brigade. In his subsequent years at the Academy, Chuck flourished and became as a sound technical mind, if not a bit insufferable due to his nearly constant second-guessing himself during high-stress evolutions.

In late 2354, Chuck's Academy evaluation scores were just high enough to earn him an assignment aboard the USS Musashi for a final field cruise to begin in 2355.
